About University of Hawaii at Hilo

The University of Hawaii at Hilo, also known as UHH or UH Hilo, is a public, co-ed state university located in Hilo, which is the 2nd largest census designated place in the US state of Hawaii, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 50 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Hilo is the county seat of Hawaii County and it is best known, besides being home to UHH, for the fact that it hosts the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula, which takes place annually after Easter.

UHH was founded in 1941 as the Hawaii Vocational College (Hawaii College). In 1947, the Hilo Program began as an extension division of UH Manoa known, locally as Hilo College, 2 years later the Program being renamed as the University of Hawaii-Hilo Center. In 1970, the institution adopted its current name, when Hilo Branch was renamed to Hilo College, the college officially becoming a part of the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Today, UH Hilo is ranked by US News and World Report among the top 10, for having both the most ethnic diversity and the lowest percentage of students with debt at graduation, it College of Hawaiian Language being the only school in the United States to offer graduate degrees for study in an indigenous language. In addition to the College of Hawaiian Language, UH Hilo is also known for its College of Pharmacy, which is the only ACPE approved pharmacy school in the State of Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.

Athletics

UH Hilo's athletic teams are known as the Vulcans, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Pacific West Conference, in 13 sports, formerly competing in NAIA (prior to 1994). Their distinctive colors are red and black.

Notable Alumni

Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable UHH alumni, there are: Stanley I. Hara - former Hawaii State Senator, Greg Chun - President of Bishop Holdings Corporation & Keauhou Resort, Ron Terry - CEO of Geometrician Associates, William `Billy` Kenoi - Mayor of Hawaii County, and Richard DeVerse - scientist & inventor, founder of Kona Labs.
